Synopsis:
The Summer of 1987. Six friends from Salamina meet in one of the island’s cafes. Then, and over the following seven years, they experience maturation as a gradual drawing-away from the paradise of their adolescent unconcern, and the emotional bonds between them slowly wither. They realize that they are no longer the center of the world and that they have been absorbed by a social system that is deadly serious. Year-in-year-out, their meetings take place less and less frequently. Every time they return to the island, they carry with them traces of different personal experiences that all the more bear the marks of modern social reality. They experience this change as a kind of decay and corruption. At the same time, their once-solid friendship inevitably fades away.

Gregory J. Markopoulos – Galini AKA Serenity (1958)

The film is based on the novella by the same name, written by Ilias Venezis and reflects the innermost bitterness of the Asia Minor Disaster. The doctor Dimitris Vellis and his younger wife, Eirini, who come from Asia Minor, settle in Anavyssos, as do many other refugees. Eirini, instead of cultivating foodstuffs – grain, grapevines or garden produce, as the government recommends, prefers to cultivate roses.

Gregory Markopoulos had kept a diary on the making of the film and the period of its shooting. James Paris had invited the young Markopoulos from America to direct the film. The result of the work, however, didn’t satisfy the young director, who ended their collaboration near the end of the filming. Paris made some complementary shots with the assistance of Grigoris Grigoriou, who undertook the editing as well. We can’t really tell what the copy that was found in the archives of the producer represents exactly – and the film never made it to the theaters.

Jane Gabriel – Greece: The Hidden War (1986)

The complete version of “Greece: The Hidden War” television series produced by Jane Gabriel is being shown in our country for the first time. The series, consisting of 3 episodes – “The Battle for Athens”, “The Civil War”, “The Homecoming”, explores the profound impact British policy in the 1940s had on Greek democracy and society for decades. Broadcast in 1986, it gave rise to “the biggest uproar in the history of British television”. Greek interviewees who lived through the events of that time speak openly about their experiences. The defeated Left fled into exile in 1949 and waited more than thirty years for the Amnesty of 1982 to return. Home at last, they tell their story, to Gella Varnava-Skouras (Research and Greek interviews), for the first time alongside the British protagonists, who until the series was broadcast, had held the monopoly of truth in the UK about the real purpose of British policy in Greece. The British elite were furious. Some of the interviewees complained to the Independent Broadcasting Authority (ΙΒΑ) that they hadn’t “fully understood the thrust of the programmes” or that their views were “not fully represented.” Lord Annan (who had been an intelligence officer close to Churchill and was later in charge of UK broadcasting legislation), joined in claiming that the programmes were “scandalously biased”. The IBA stood firm: “The IBA accepts that this was a legitimate approach. We do not believe that the story of the returning exiles, told in their own words, is in itself a breach of the requirements of due impartiality and that it stands as historical evidence in its own right”. However, after extensive coverage of the row in the British press, the complainants and their friends in high places prevailed, and Channel 4 agreed that the series would not be shown again either in the UK or abroad.

Synopsis
The story of four fellow students who fall in love with the same girl (Adriana / Maria Perdiki), who has shook up their lives with her unexpected appearance as well as her enigmatic presence, and who will give them up in the same dramatic way, as if she never existed. The incurably romantic Takis Kanellopoulos returns to his favorite theme of “lost youth”.

This autobiographical film by Takis Kanellopoulos won an honorary photography distinction at the 19th Thessaloniki Film Festival.

Vrasidas Karalis wrote:
Kanellopoulos’ later movies, The Last Spring (I Teleutaia Anoixi, 1972), The Chronicle of Sunday (To Hroniko tis Kyriakis, 1975), and especially Romantic Note (Romantiko Simeioma, 1978), unfortunately ossified his unique style into self-referential projects, which should have been short films but which Kanellopoulos expanded in a desperate attempt to tell a story that simply no longer existed. In Romantic Note he dispensed altogether with plot line and used the camera as the eye of an innocent bystander, looking here and there, unfocused and unattached and salvaging from oblivion and trivialization only fleeting experiences.

Vangelis Serdaris – Listeia stin Athina AKA Robbery in Athens (1969)

Three young people have decided to rob the safe of the estate agent Thomas Christidis, whose office is in the center of Athens. The first of them is Ntinos, who is Christidis’ clerk, the second one is Stavros, Ntinos’ younger brother who works as a book representative, while their friend Michalis is a pirate taxi-driver. The robbery is successful, and they feel excited (tainiothiki.gr)

Vangelis Serdaris’ Robbery in Athens (Listeia stin Athina, 1969) was an accomplished and masterful attempt to reinvent film noir by infusing it with a new sense of filmic temporality through an elongation of time, a slowing down of action, and a prolonging of silences (not unlike Jules Dassin’s 1955 Rififi).

In his film debut, Serdaris explores the underworld of Athens with remarkable honesty, psychological characterization, and impartiality. His camera discreetly pans in and out to capture an unpredictable contrast between internal and external space, employing expressionist techniques, which transform the urban landscape into a surrealist nightmare.

Unfortunately, the film didn’t receive the attention it deserved, not evenfor its delirious music by Nikos Theodosiadis. Given also the fact that some of the most important representatives of the new cinema contributed to its making (Theo Angelopoulos, Pandelis Voulgaris, Dimos Theos, and others), one could claim that Serdaris’ movie was one of the main links between the commercial cinema of the 1960s and the aesthetics of the New Greek Cinema that was to emerge several years later (Vrasidas Karalis – A History of Greek Cinema)

Plot synopsis
At midnight, on a deserted Athenian street, a beautiful woman named Eleni Chalkia is fatally stabbed by a stranger, who immediately disappears into the shadows. The murderer is Ioannis Zachos (Manos Logiadis), a young man lacking in both mental and sexual stability, who lives out his erotic fantasies through purifying violence. He often fantasizes about killing beautiful women, in this way compensating for his deficient manhood and satisfying his passion for power. When he is arrested, he immediately confesses his crimes, which is a relief to the police, who have been accused of gross ineptitude by the press. During the trial that follows, the relentless question, “who is ultimately guilty? Man or society?” is again raised. Ioannis Zachos is not sentenced to time in prison because of his disturbed personality, but instead must spend the rest of his life in an institution for the criminally insane.

Synopsis
Kala azar describes of a place that cannot sustain animal life any longer. In a big city somewhere in the south of Europe, a couple takes care of dead animals and abandoned roadkill as an act to give meaning to their life. Kala azar is a meditation on the paradox of life-circles among beings of different species. A film about existence, on the boundaries between living and dead, human and non-human.

Letterboxd Review
★★★½ Added by Kevin Matthews 30 Jun 2021

A bizarre, but compelling, look at the human animal, exploring different ways in which grief can be dealt with, and also exploited, Kala Azar isn’t entirely successful, but it’s definitely another film that feels very much like a Greek success story coming along in the wake of the films of Yorgos Lanthimos.

Yannis Smaragdis – Kavafis AKA Cavafy (1996)

“Constantine P. Cavafy, also known as Konstantin or Konstantinos Petrou Kavafis, or Kavaphes (Greek: Κωνσταντίνος Π. Καβάφης) (April 29, 1863 – April 29, 1933) was a renowned Greek poet who lived in Alexandria and worked as a journalist and civil servant. In his poetry he examined critically some aspects of Christianity, patriotism, and homosexuality, though he was not always comfortable with his role as a nonconformist. He published 154 poems; dozens more remained incomplete or in sketch form. His most important poetry was written after his fortieth birthday.

This movie about the greatest modern Greek poet was met with criticism from Greek audiences on two grounds. It focuses almost exclusively on Cavafy’s sexuality (a topic the average Greek high school teacher still prefers to bypass) and it presents the peculiar innovation of having Cavafy not speak a single word throughout the entire movie. Many Greek viewers considered the latter device completely antithetical to the poet’s eloquent verse. The only voice of the poet in the movie are his poems which are recited in the background over many scenes.

The movie does not cover all of Cavafy’s life in detail but sketches the main episodes and definitely recreates the atmosphere of his poetry. The breathtaking cinematography is light years ahead of most films made in Greece. Everyone interested in the poet’s work should watch it, but better read a short biographical note on him first because the movie itself is too poetic to follow a rigid narrative structure.”

“C.P. Cavafy (1863-1933) was a Greek poet who wrote exquisitely about his beloved cities, Alexandria and Constantinople, and about the beautiful, sexually available men who lived in them. Thanks to Lawrence Durrell’s frequent favorable mention of him in his popular novels The Alexandria Quartet, Cavafy has become a figure of considerable literary interest outside of Greek and homosexual circles. Part biography, part fantasy, but very much in the spirit of the poet’s work, this film begins in 1933 as a young literateur reads to Cavafy (Vassilis Diamandopoulos), lying abed in an Alexandrian hospital. Cavafy drifts away into memories from his life and the film takes up his story from childhood.”
Clarke Fountain, AllMovie

“Yannis Smaragdis’ Cavafy was a remarkable yet uneven attempt to depict the biography of the great poet—a film that tried to reconstruct visually the temporality of his poems through an introspection which, in a strange way, resisted the challenge of Cavafy’s homosexuality. Through its over-aestheticization, the film undervalues the male body as the ultimate hypertext in Cavafy’s poems. Sensuality without sexuality makes the film somehow a middle-class exercise in mainstreaming Cavafy’s eroticism. Actor Dimitris Katalifos gave a compelling performance full of sensitivity and reserve, although occasionally he looks lost and bewildered, showing that something greater was happening in the mind of the poet at the very
